Answer: fill the 5 gallon jug- pour 3 gallon into the 3 gallon jug- leaving 2 gallon in the 5 gallon jug - throw out the 3 gallons from the 3 gallon jug - pour the 2 gallon from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug- fill up the 5 gallon jug - top up the 3 gallon jug with 1 gallon from the 5 gallon jug - leaving 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.
