She had her first break in acting when she joined the 1985 Star Search at the age of 17. Although she did not win the contest a producer saw her and asked her to appear in the film Zombie Nightmare. She then decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. Her first significant role was in the television series Airwolf in 1985. Then she appeared in General Hospital from 1985 to 1987. This was followed by appearances in The A-Team. Then she appeared as guest for the hit series Mac Gyver. She reprised her role in several episodes more.
Then she was seen in different shows including Anything But Love and Married … With Children. In Married with Children, she appeared as Piper Bauman, the arch enemy of Kelly Bundy.
In 1991, she starred in Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. In Harley Davidson, she was noticed by producers and fans. Also that year she appeared in the action film Showdown in Little Tokyo. She gained recognition however in the film she made the following year. In 1992, she landed the lead female role in Wayne’s World. She appeared opposite Mike Myers and was his love interest in the movie. For that year People Magazine named her as one of its 50 Most Beautiful Woman of the World.
With the success of Wayne’s World, more offers followed but Tia was side tracked by her marriage to Elie Samaha. Then she returned to the big screen in True Lies in 1994. She appeared opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Arnold. The film was a huge success in the box office and it cemented Tia as a one of the good character actresses in Hollywood. The following year she appeared in The Immortals as Gina Walker. In 1996, she played the role of Victoria Chapell in the parody High School High. Then form 1999 to the year 2002 she appeared as Sydney Fox in the series Relic Hunter.
Aside from acting, Tia is also a singer. In 1993, she recorded Dream, her first solo album. She sang the ending theme for Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, I Never Even Told You.
In 2000, Tia divorced her husband Samaha. Then she married photographer Simon Wakelin in 2002. She now lives with him and their daughter in Canada.
