When Natalie Imbruglia was 14, her dance teacher encouraged her to be a part of an all-girl group and audition. During the audition, the judges saw that her beauty, voice and talent could make Imbruglia a star even on her own. Although the judges wanted to sign her as a solo act, Natalie refused. Instead, she later auditioned for various Australian TV commercials and won a role for Coke, Twisties and several other ads.
At age 16, Natalie Imbruglia left school to focus on her acting career. A few months later, she landed a regular role in the daytime drama, Neighbours. However, she left the show during her second year and moved to London. In the United Kingdom, Natalie Imbruglia was refused a work permit, leading to her bankruptcy. Because of this, she was forced to start a career in singing and rekindled her passion in the art. After making a demo on the song Torn, Natalie impressed BMG Publishing and RCA Records, landing her a record contract.
The first album Natalie released internationally included the single, Torn, which instantly became an overnight success worldwide. It became one of the biggest singles of the 90s, selling over 1 million copies in the UK alone. The royalties that Natalie Imbruglia received for the song Torn was rumored to be around 5 million GBP in 1997 to 1998.
In 1998, Natalie Imbruglia launched her debut album, Left of the Middle. She released her second single, Big Mistake, which debuted at number 2. It was followed by Wishing I was There and Smoke. The album became a million-dollar seller after charting in various countries and hitting in the U.S. and UK Top Ten.
In 2001, Imbruglia released her next album, White Lillies Island. It was popular for songs like That Day, Wrong Impression and Beauty on the Fire. Although it did not reach the success of her first album, it did sell over a million copies. Two years later, she launched her third album, Counting Down the Days with singles such as Shiver, Sanctuary and Perfectly. The album sold over 200,000 copies in UK alone.
In 2003, Natalie Imbruglia married longtime boyfriend, Daniel Johns (Silverchair lead singer). To celebrate her 10th year in the music industry, the Glorious: The Singles 1997-2007 album was launched with some of the best Natalie Imbruglia songs and new singles, including Glorious and Be With You.
