Moira Kelly was born in New York on March 6, 1968. Her mother is a nurse, and her father is a concert violinist. She grew up in New York and went to the Connetquot Senior High School in Long Island, and attended college at the Marymount Manhattan College. During the time she was in college, she did all sorts of odd jobs to support herself, some of them being a waitress and nanny. Moira Kelly is also talented in the violin, drum and flute, as she is highly influenced by her father. She even entered opera competitions during high school.

Moira Kelly’s first brush in acting was for her high school’s Annie production. She originally wanted to be a nun when she was younger, but things changed when she got offered her first film. In 1991, she got her first movie assignments for The Boy Who Cried Bitch; Love, Lies and Murder; and Billy Bathgate. Billy Bathgate earned Moira Kelly attention as an actress.

Moira Kelly got her first lead role for The Cutting Edge in 1992, as skater Kate Mosley, and this has been one of her greatest performances. In 1994, Moira Kelly lent her voice to Nala for the Lion King, which made her a favorite with the toddler audience. She was then cast as a regular for the television series To Have and To Hold, as Annie Cornell, in 1998. This was followed by The West Wing where she stayed for two years. She starred as Madeline Hampton, and the role won her a Screen Actors Guild Award in the category of Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series, along with the rest of the cast.

More recent appearances include Little Odessa, Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story, Love Walked In, Dangerous Beauty, and Henry Hill. Recently Moira Kelly returned to the small screen again, this time as Karen Roe, a mother on the show One Tree Hill. She has been on the show since 2003. Her performance earned her a Teen Choice Awards nomination for the category of Choice TV Parental Units. In 2003, she also starred in The Safety of Objects, a drama that was screened at the Toronto Film Festival.

Moira Kelly married Steve Hewitt in 2000. He is a businessman from Texas, and together they have two children, Eamon and Ella. Moira Kelly currently splits her time between California, New York, and Washington, where she films for One Tree Hill.
