Madeleine Stowe was born on the 18th of August 1958 in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, California. Her father was British and her mother Costa Rican. When she was ten years old she took piano lessons and wanted to become a concert pianist. Her music teacher, Sergei Tarnowsky, who once taught Vladimir Horowitz, saw a potential in her that he insisted on teaching her on his death bed. When he died Madelein decided to quit her lessons.

She entered the University of Southern California and studied journalism and cinema. Since she was not really interested with her studies she volunteered playing piano at the Solaris. In the Beverly Hills Theatre she was spotted by an agent and offered her acting jobs.

She then began to appear in many supporting role on movies and televisions. She was seen in the 1987 Stakeout. She appeared opposite Richard Dreyfuss. Then in 1990 she co-starred with Kevin Costner in Revenge. It was finally in 1992 when she landed her first leading role opposite Daniel Day Lewis in the movie The Last of the Mohicans. The following year, she appeared in Robert Altman’s Short Cuts. Her role as a wife of the adulterous police officer was critically acclaimed. She played opposite Tim Robbins.

In 1994, she won a role as a blind musician in Blink and another notable role in the 1995 Twelve Monkeys opposite Bruce Willis. In 1996, her priority was her family and motherhood. She did not do any films until 1998. In 1998, she appeared in the film The Proposition.

Her other appearances included Southern Comfort a TV Series in 2006, Saving Milly in 2005, Octane in 2003, Impostor, Avenging Angelo, We Were Soldiers, and The Magnificent Ambersons in 2002, The General's Daughter in 1999, The Proposition and Playing by Heart in 1998, Bad Girls, China Moon and Blink in 1994, Another Stakeout in 1993, Unlawful Entry and The Last of the Mohicans in 1992, Closet Land in 1991, The Two Jakes and Revenge in 1990, Stakeout in 1987 and Blood & Orchids in 1986.

She also appeared as herself in The WIN Awards in 2005, Biography Kevin Costner, Making Avenging Angelo, We Were Soldiers: Getting it Right, “Leute heute”, The Rosie O’Donnel Show, The Directors (for Michael Mann and Terry Gilliam), The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of Twelve Monkeys, Late Show With David Letterman, The American Film Institute Salute to Jack Nicholson and in Luck, Trust & Ketchup: Robert Altman in Carver County.
Madeleine lives in Texas with her husband Brian Benben. She married him in 1982 and they have two children.
