Lisa Marie was born Lisa Marie Smith on the 5th of December 1968 in New Jersey. She was brought up by her grandparents and father and was raised in the Catholic faith. At the age of four, when her grandmother died, she was enrolled by her father to a Catholic school. Later, she was trained in ballet for eight years under the prestigious New Jersey Ballet. She was also had classical piano training when she was growing up.

When she was 15 years old, Lisa Marie left New Jersey and moved to New York to formally train for music, theatre and dance. In New York she soon became a model for Robert Mapplethorpe and became the model for the perfume Obsession, by Calvin Klein. In the ad, she was photographed by the esteemed photographer Bruce Weber.

Working with Weber, Lisa Marie appeared in the documentary by Weber on the life of Chet Baker, the jazz trumpeter. Soon she landed a small part in the movie Alice, by Woody Allen. After appearing in Alice, in 1991, she then met movie director Tim Burton on a nightclub. By this time she had already left Calvin Klein.

In 1992, Lisa Marie got engaged to Tim Burton, whereupon she appeared in some of his films. They were engaged from 1992 to 2001. In 2000, she hosted the television series "Exposure by the Sci-Fi Channel". Her last appearance in a Tim Burton film was in the movie, Planet of the Apes. After the movie, she and Tim parted ways and she never appeared in any of his films again.

In most of her films, Lisa Marie showcased her voluptuously sexy body, such as in Ed Wood, Breast Men and Mars Attacks. But in other films she has proven her acting talent and was praised for her performance, particularly in the independent films.

Lisa Marie is one considered as one of the sexiest actresses in Hollywood. She has been featured in several magazines including, Esquire, Maxim and Vanity Fair, in which she has taken some of the pictures herself.

In 2004, it was reported that Tim Burton failed to pay her a settlement amounting to $5.4 million. Lisa Marie was then forced to host a yard sale to sell Burton memorabilia.
