Lena Olin was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on March 22, 1955. Her father is Stig Olin, and her mother is Britta Holmberg. Her parents are divorced, and both are actors. Lena Olin studied at the National Academy of Dramatic Art in Sweden, and also performed with the Royal Dramatic Theater. As a child, she was cast in Shakespeare plays as well as Ibsen and Strindberg.

Lena Olin’s first film was in 1976, for the movie Face to Face. She was cast by Ingmar Bergman, although it was a small role. She later on appeared in other Bergman stage productions in Sweden as well as in other countries such as Berlin, Copenhagen, and Paris for the King Lear stage plays she did for Bergman. Her next film was Adventures of Picasso in 1978, and another Bergman film in 1982, Fanny and Alexander. Lena Olin’s 1984 film, After the Rehearsal, cast her as Anna, a stage actress who gets pregnant while working on a Strindberg production. The movie was Lena Olin’s debut for international film. The film was a foreboding of what would happen to her, as she gets pregnant during a Bergman production of a Strindberg play called A Dream Play.

Lena Olin did other stage productions, such as The Master and the Margarita, The Servant of Two Masters, Summer, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Alchemist, and Miss Julie. In 1988, she starred in her first English speaking role for the movie adaptation of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, based on Milan Kundera’s novel. It was this film that earned Lena Olin international acclaim as an actress. She appeared nude in the movie, and followed by another nude appearance for Enemies: A Love Story in 1989. Her role as Masha in Enemies earned her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.

Throughout the nineties, Lena Olin starred in a variety of roles, showcasing her versatility as an actress. In 1993, she starred opposite Richard Gere in Mrs. Jones, Romeo Is Bleeding, and The Night Is The Moment in 1994, Night Falls in Manhattan with Andy Garcia in 1997, and Hamilton in 1998. In 2000, she starred in Chocolat, which garnered five Academy Award nominations. Lena Olin also started work in the small screen from 2002 to 2006, her debut as well in American Television, for Alias. She was cast alongside Jennifer Garner.

Lena Olin has one son with Ojran Ramberg, whose name is August Ramberg, whom she gave birth to in 1986. She was living in with Ojran Ramberg for five years before they separated. Currently, Lena Olin is living in New York.
