Lea Thompson was born Lea Katherine Thompson on the 31st of May 1961 in Rochester, Minnesota. As a child Lea studied dance and was already dancing as a professional at the age of 14. Her dancing skills earned her several scholarships including one from The American Ballet Theatre and one from The San Francisco Ballet. As a professional ballet dancer she danced with the prestigious The Ballet Repertory, the Minnesota Dance Theatre and The Pennsylvania Ballet Company. She decided to give up dancing due to some innuendoes about her built including Baryshnikov’s comment that she was “too stocky” for a ballet dancer.

At the age of 20, after deciding to quit ballet she moved to New York where she landed several ads including the ones for Burger King. Her first important role was in 1983 movie All The Right Moves. The film was followed the following year by Red Dawn and Wild Life. Her most significant and famous role was in the trilogy of Back to the Future. She appeared as Lorraine Baines Mc Fly and she played opposite Michael J. Fox.

In 1986, she was also seen in the movie Space Camp and in the movie Howard the Duck. In 1993, she was in the movie Dennis the Menace. She won the People’s Choice award and was nominated for the ACE Award for her acclaimed performance in the Nightbreaker. Her performance opposite Farrah Fawcett in The Substitute Wife was also praised highly by the critics.

In 1995, she landed the role in Caroline in the City. Her old and new fans loved the NBC sitcom that lasted from 1995 to 1999. In 2005, she landed the lead in the Jane Doe in the movie made for television by the Hallmark Channel. The previous year she appeared in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit as guest star. In 2006, she appeared in Celebrity Duets.

Lea is married to Howard Deutch. She met him in the filming of Some Kind of Wonderful. She has two daughters with Deutch. Before him she was once engaged to Dennis Quaid.
