Lauren Bacall Biography
Lauren Bacalls first Broadway production was in 1942s January Two By Four. She also starred in the stage production Applause. Her big break came when the wife of director Howard Hawks saw her in Harpers Bazaar and advised her husband to take Lauren Bacall for a screen test. She then landed the part of Marie Browning in the movie To Have and Have Not, where she costarred with Humphrey Bogart. Lauren Bacall started a love affair with Humphrey Bogart, and this was also the first of many films together.
To Have and Have Not was a success, and instantly made Lauren Bacall a star. She starred in Confidential Agent before other films with Humphrey Bogart: The Big Sleep, Dark Passage, and Key Largo. She was always a beauty onscreen and off, and her roles always allowed her to play out various types of beauties, from seductress to dame, even sometimes near lesbian. The fifties saw many great movie performances from Lauren Bacall, and these included Young Man with a Horn, How to Marry a Millionaire, and Written on the Wind.
Lauren Bacalls acting prowess enabled her to star in movies alongside great actors, such as How to Marry a Millionaire where she costarred with Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable. In 1957s Designing Woman, she costarred with Gregory Peck. Sadly during the sixties, the quality and quantity of films Lauren Bacall starred in was waning. During this period she married Jason Robards and raised their children. She shot few movies during this time, and she was one of the all star cast on the movie Sex and the Single Girl, where she costarred with Henry Fonda and Natalie Wood.
Lauren Bacall entered an eight year break from acting, and resumed with Murder on the Orient Express, in 1974. During the eighties, she played older women in supporting roles which included The Fan in 1981, and Appointment with Death in 1988. During this time, Lauren Bacall also did stage productions again.
During the nineties, her career regained anew as she starred in top quality roles and movies. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 1996s The Mirror Has Two Faces. Lauren Bacall also starred in Dogville in 2003, and Birth in 2004, both with Nicole Kidman.
Lauren Bacall has a child with Humphrey Bogart, whom she was married to until he died of throat cancer. Their childs name is Stephen Humphrey Bogart. In October 1997, Lauren Bacall was ranked number 11 in Empire Magazines Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time, and in 1995 by the same magazine called one of 100 Sexiest Stars in Film History.
