Laura was born from a psychotherapist, secretary and real estate mother while her father was a German farmer. Her parents divorced when she was young and she then lived with in Mexico until the age of ten. Then her family moved to San Antonio, Texas where she grew up until the age of sixteen, when she moved to Switzerland to study at the prestigious school, Aiglon College.
After attending Aiglon College, Laura Harring returned to the US and lived in El Paso, Texas. In El Paso, she joined several beauty contests. She then won the Miss El Paso beauty pageant and then the Miss Texas USA. Eventually she won the Miss USA 1985, making her the first Hispanic Miss USA.
After her reign as Miss USA, Laura Harring worked for a year as a social worker in India and also went traveling across Europe and Asia. In Europe she met and married Count Carl-Eduard von Bismarck-Schönhausen, but eventually divorced him in 1989. She also trained at the London Academy of Performing Arts.
In 1987, Laura Harring was seen in television, The Alamo: Thirteen Days to Glory. The following year, she appeared in Desperado: Avalanche at Devils Ridge, a movie made for television. Then in 1989, she appeared in Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out. In 1990, she showed her dancing skills in the movie The Forbidden Dance.
In 1991, Laura Harring appeared in the series General Hospital and in the movie Dead Women in Lingerie. In 1993, she was also seen in Rio Diablo, in 1994 in Exit to Eden and in 1995 in the television series Empire.
By this time, Laura Harring was considered as one of the sexiest actresses in Hollywood. Many offers followed and she was seen in several television series and films including The Punisher, The Poet, Derailed, Little Nicky, Frasier, California, Black Scorpion II: Aftershock, Nancy Drew, Love in the Time of Cholera and Sunset Beach.
