Kyra Sedgwick was born on August 19, 1965, in Manhattan, New York, to parents Patricia Rosenwald and Henry Dwight. Her parents divorced when Kyra was still young. She is the cousin of Edie Sedgwick, the muse of Andy Warhol. Kyra Sedgwick attended private schools, such as the Friends Seminary where she had her first stint in acting by starring in a theater production of Fiddler on the Roof at the tender age of 12, and realized she wanted to act. She also went to Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, and then took up theater at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Kyra Sedgwick’s first professional acting gig was for the NBC soap opera Another World when she was 15, of which she worked for 2 years. She also did a theater play called Time Was. Her beautiful looks and lovely blond hair easily enabled her to land good acting jobs not to mention her striking onscreen presence and ability to put herself in her characters’ shoes. Kyra Sedgwick’s first major production was a period movie called War and Love, followed by Cindy Eller: A Modern Fairy Tale, both of which she starred in when she was still studying in USC. In 1987, she had a small role for the movie Lemon Sky, where she costarred and met Kevin Bacon who would then be her future husband and costar for other films as well.

The movie that made Kyra Sedgwick popular was 1989’s Born on the Fourth of July, which she starred opposite Tom Cruise. This saw the launch of many more movies, such as Singles where she starred with Matt Dillon, Murder in the First, Something to Talk About, and The Low Life, among others. Kyra Sedgwick also tried her hand in producing; her first was HBO’s Montana, where she also starred. She preferred independent film projects, steering away from the limelight.

Some of Kyra Sedgwick’s more recent films include Behind the Red Door in 2002, Secondhand Lions in 2003, and Cavedweller which she produced with husband Kevin Bacon in 2004. In 2005, she starred in The Closer as a police detective in the prime time crime series. It earned her several awards such as Outstanding Female Lead in a Drama Series, Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series in a Drama, Best Actress in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Actress in a Series for Drama.

Kyra Sedgwick currently has two children with Kevin Bacon, daughter Sosie Bacon and son Travis Bacon. The couple and their family live in Connecticut.
