Kelly Lynchs first film was entitled Osa, where she played the title character, in 1985. Her first lead for a major film came in 1988, when she acted in Bright Lights, Big City. This was followed by Cocktails where she was cast with Tom Cruise, although hers was a minor role. Kelly Lynch also starred in the action movie Road House, an action movie, where she costarred with Patrick Swayze. In 1989s Drugstore Cowboy, she plays a drug addict, and her role in the movie finally gave her some critical acclaim. She was cast alongside Matt Dillon for the movie. Since she got into an automobile accident that broke her leg and took one year to recover, she became close to become dependent and addicted to painkillers, so she could also very well relate to the film.
During the nineties, Kelly Lynch played a bigger variety of roles which proved she was a very versatile actress. In 1991, she starred in the comedy Curly Sue, alongside James Belushi. She had many films where she was cast with celebrities who have already been established, although until present day she is still not that much established as a superstar. In 1993, she starred in the movie Three of Hearts, a romantic comedy, costarring with Sherilynn Fenn and William Baldwin. Three of Hearts was also co-scripted by her husband, Mitch Glazer, whom she married in 1992.

Kelly Lynch had been offered the role of Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, although she declined it. She has one daughter named Shane, from an early relationship.
