Joely first appeared on film when she was three, on her fathers film in 1968 The Charge of the Light Brigade. Her first major role was in the Agatha Christie series, Poirot in 1989, where she played the role of Joanna Farley. Prior to this, she was seen in Drowning by Numbers by Peter Green way.
In 1991, Joely Richardson was seen in the comedy King Ralph playing the role of Anna, the Finnish princes. Then the following year, she was seen in the movie Shinning Through, where she played the role of a Nazi woman. In this movie, she starred opposite Michael Douglas, Melanie Griffith and her brother in law, Liam Neeson.
In 1993, Joely Richardson played the role of Lady Chatterley, opposite actor Sean Bean, in television series of the same title. Then in 1996, she was seen in Disneys hit film 101 Dalmatians. In this film, she played the role of Anita, the fashion designer, and was seen opposite Glenn Close, who played the role of the villain Cruella de Vil.
Then in 1998, Joely Richardson landed the role of Amanda Powell in the hit television show The Echo. The following year, 1999, she was seen in the hit horror and sci-fi movie, Event Horizon. In this film, she played the role of Leutenant Starck, the executive officer of Lewis & Clark, the research and rescue ship sent to rescue the crew of the long lost but recently found space ship Event Horizon.
The following year, 2000, Joely Richardson was seen in the hit film, the Patriot, opposite actor Mel Gibson. She was also seen in the movie Maybe Baby, opposite Hugh Laurie that year and in the film adaptation of Ben Eltons book, Inconceivable.
That same year, Joely Richardson was offered to play the role of Marie Antoinette when Charles Shyer noticed her resemblance to the infamous queen of France. Thus in 2001 she played the role of Marie Antoinette in 2001 in the movie The Affair of the Necklace.
In 2003, Joely Richardson landed a major role in the hit television series Nip/Tuck, playing the role of Julia McNamara. In the series, her mother, Vanessa, appeared as guest star and played the role of her mother. In 2005, Joely Richardson was seen in Lies My Mother Told Me and in 2007 she was seen in The Last Mimzy.
