In 1995 James dropped out of high school and went to New York to pursue a career in modeling. She had previous training under the Nancy Bounds Studio and thought it would be more fruitful to use that instead of staying in Westside High School.
James King was able to launch a successful career in modeling but at the age of 14, until 19, she became a heroin addict, which is common among models at that time. Then in 1997, when her boyfriend, the brother of Davide Sorrenti, the famous fashion photographer, died reputedly from excessive use of heroine, she decided to clean her act and entered herself in to a rehabilitation clinic.

James King was then seen in several magazines including, Mademoiselle, Seventeen, Allure and even Vogue. At the age of 16, she was already featured in Harpers Bazaar and Glamour magazines. By 1994, she landed an advertisement for Abercrombie & Fitch and this soon became very fruitful for herself and for the company.
In 1996, James King was the cover story of New York Times Magazine and was already strutting the walkways of Christian Dior, Chanel and other top fashion designers. By 1998, she along with model Rebecca Romijn hosted MTVs House of Style. From then on she was featured in several commercials and ads for Revlon, Express Jeans, Armani Exchange, Matsuda, Bebe, Cesare Paciotti and Coach. And just recently she was the face of Rocawear and was seen in its ad for the winter collection.
Aside from modeling, James King was also seen in several films, as supporting cast and even lead roles. She was first seen as an actress in the movie Happy Campers in 1999.
