Iman was born Iman Abdulmajid on the 25th of July 1955 in Somalia. Her father was the ambassador to Saudi Arabia and as a child Iman attended high school in Egypt. After high school she earned her degree in political science from the the University of Nairobi. Since her father’s job took her to different places across the globe, Iman became fluent in five languages.

Prior to moving to the US, Iman and her family lived in Nairobi, Kenya. In 1977 she married basketball star Spencer Haywood and later divorced in 1987. In 1992 she married rock star and actor David Bowie and at present they live in London and in New York.

At present, Iman is involved in her own line of cosmetics, named "Iman Cosmetics". The line was specially made for women of color. She has also appeared in several films, music videos and even in computer games. She is also busy with the campaign to provide medicine to HIV and AIDS children in Africa and India, the Keep A Child Alive.

Iman was discovered by the famous fashion photographer Peter Beared as he was driving down in Standard Street in Nairobi. She jumped at the change to get out of Africa to escape her failed marriage. In 1975, she moved to New York and was shocked to find the street littered with filth and garbage. When she arrived, the city was under garbage strike.

Without having to go through the usual interview, Iman was immediately hired by Wilhelmina and other top designers, including Bill Blass. Soon she became a sensation and rose to international stardom. She graced the cover of almost all top fashion magazines. In shows, the crowd wanted to see her more than the clothes being modeled. At the height of her career, she commanded a salary of as much as $100,000 per collection.
