Idina Menzels first debut performance was in the Broadway production of Rent in 1986. She was an original cast and played the part of Maureen Johnson. For playing Maureen, she was nominated as Best Feature Actress in a Musical by the Tony Awards.
After the success of Rent, Idina Menzel was next seen in the Goodspeed Opera House production of Summer of 42. This was followed by the New York City Center Encores production of Hair and the Broadway production of Aida. Then Idina was seen in The Wild Party, for which she was nominated for Drama Desk Award. She was also hailed for her performance in The Vagina Monologues.
In 2003, Idina Menzel appeared in the Broadway production of Wicked, by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwarts. The musical was based on the novel by Gregory Maguire and she appeared alongside Kristin Chenoweth. For her performance, she was awarded the Best Leading Actress in a Musical in the 2004 Tony Awards.
Idina Menzel played the role of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba. In 2006, she reprised her role in Wicked at eh Apollo Victoria Theatre in London.
After Wicked, she was next seen in the off-Broadway production of See What I Wanna See, musical was written by Michael John LaChiusa. For playing different characters in the musical, she was nominated at the Drama League Award and was awarded the Drama Desk Award.
Aside from appearing on stage, Idina Menzel was also seen in the big screen. Her movie appearances include Just a Kiss, Tollbooth, Ask the Dust, Kissing Jessica Stein and Water. Idina Menzel, along with five original cast members of Rent, reprised their role in the film version of the musical.
Idina Menzel also enjoys a successful career in music. In 1998, she was one of the performers at the Lilith Fair festival. She also writes her own music which she performs at the different events in New York. In 1998, she released her own album entitled, Still I Cant Be Still. Its single Minuet reached the #48 of the Radio and Records CHR Pop Tracks chart.
She also contributed to several soundtracks including the soundtracks of The Other Sister and Desperate Housewives. Idina Menzel is set to release her third album by 2008.
