In 1977, Gretta Scacchi decided to pursue her career in acting. She returned to England and enrolled at the Bristol Old Vice Theatre School. She attended the prestigious school with fellow actresses Amanda Redman and Miranda Richardson. By 1982 she had debuted in big screen in the German film Das Zweite Gesicht or The Second Face (in English). The following year she appeared in Heat and Dust for which the critics loved her performance. In 1984, she was seen in The Ebony Tower.
In 1987, Gretta Scacchi appeared in the movie Presumed Innocent. In 1990 she was seen in The Player and the following year in the movie Country Life. In 1992, regrettably, she did not accept the Basic Instinct role of Catherine Trammell. Aside from the movies, she was also seen in television. She appeared in Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny in 1996. She was nominated for her performance in the Emmy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards and other award giving bodies. Then in 2007 she appeared in Broken Trail. For her performance in Broken Trail, she was nominated for Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie, again by the Emmy Awards.
Gretta Scacchis other appearances included Miss Austen Regrets as Cassandra Austen. She is set to appear in 2008 for Brideshead Revisited as Cara. In 2007 she also appears in Shoot on Sight as Susan, in the miniseries The Trojan Horse as Helen Madigan, in the film Amour cache, L as Dr. Dubois and in the television series Afternoon Play: Johnny Shakespeare episode as Dianne.
In 2006, Gretta Scacchi was seen in The Book of Revelation as Isabel; in the television miniseries Nightmares and Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King as Dr. Katie Arlen; in the television Broken Trail as Nola Johns; and in the television Marple: By the Pricking of My Thumbs as Tuppence Beresford.
Gretta Scacchi was romantically involved with Tim Fin, the New Zealand songwriter/singer. They had a long relationship lasting from 1983 to 1989. After Fin, Gretta fell in love with Vincent DOnofrio. Their romance lasted until 1993. They had a daughter born in 1992, named Leila. Gretta also had a son from her boyfriend and cousin, Carlo Mantegazza.
