While she was in summer stock in Vermont, Gretchen Mol made several appearances including in the 110 In the Shade and Godspell. Then in 2001 she appeared on stage in the New York and London production of The Shape of Things by Neil LaBute. It was the roles she reprised in the 2003 film version of the same title. Then in 2004, she played the role of Roxie in Chicagos Broadway production.
In 1994, Gretchen Mol was photographed by Davis Powell. The picture landed on the cover of W and from then on she had a new more dignified and professional look. She then left modeling and pursued a career in acting. In 1998, she was seen in the movie Rounders. In this film, she appeared opposite actor Matt Damon. She also appeared in the film Celebrity by Woody Allen. Her co-star in Celebrity was Leonardo DiCaprio.
The same year, 1998 titillating pictures of Gretchen Mol appeared on Vanity Fair and the magazine dubbed her as the It Girl of the Nineties. Ironically her films failed in the box office and she did not live up to the magazines prediction.
Gretchen Mol continued to appear in many films including the film New Rose Hotel and the Music From Another Room, where she played opposite actor Jude Law. In 1999, again she was seen in another Woody Allen film, the Sweet and Lowdown. For the film Sweet and Lowdown, she gave a notable performance for a minor role. In 2003, she appeared in the film Heavy Put-Away and in the film Puccini for Beginners. In Puccini for Beginners she played the character of a lesbian involve in an affair. Then she worked for two years in the film The Notorious Bette Page.
In 2007, Gretchen Mol finished four films including Boy of Pigs and the remake of the film 3:10 to Yuma. In Boy of Pigs she played the character of Catherine Caswell, the woman who (in the film) had an affair with John F. Kennedy. In the film 3:10 to Yuma she appeared opposite Russell Crowe.
