In 1989, with the help of her manager Andrade, Gloria Trevi released Que Hago Aqui, her first album. The album became a hit and one of the singles, Dr. Psiquiatra, reached the top of the charts. In 1991 she released her second album, Tu angel de la guardia. This became more successful than her first album. The single Pelo Suelto reached the number one in Latin America and Span charts. It was also a hit among the Latinos in the United States. In 1993 she released her third album, Zapatos Viejos which was recorded in the United States. This also reached top of the charts.
Gloria Trevi’s lyrics had some very heavy sexual references. Her songs also included sensitive topics such as hypocrisies of the upper class, about realities of prostitution, religion, hunger, war and other issues in Mexico. She is also a feminist and challenged Mexico’s acceptance of machismo
Gloria Trevi also did a movie entitled Pelo Suelto with Humberto Zurita. The film became a box office sensation and set the box office record in Mexico. Then she made her second movie Zapatos Viejos with Mexican boxing champ Jorge “El Maromero” Paez.
Aside from recoding and acting in films, Gloria Trevi also made a calendar. The first calendar was a success and this she followed with yearly releases. The calendars were very sexy and suggestive. In 1992, she toured South America and the Caribbean.
In 1998, Andrade’s ex-wife published a book about his habit of picking up girls with the promise of making them stars. In the book, Gloria Trevi was named as his accomplice. In 1999, the girls who allegedly escaped Andrade appeared and exposed everything on television. She and Andrade fled Mexico before the Mexican government declared them as fugitives. After moving to different countries they were captured in Brazil. While in Brazilian jail she got pregnant, allegedly by one of the jail guards.
Gloria Trevi and Andrade were extradited in 2002 and they were sent to jail in 2003. Then in 2004 she was acquitted and was set free. She then made another album, Como nace el universo which became a hit. This was followed by another album, a compilation of her best songs. Again this became a certified gold.
