While studying at the university, Gigi Leung got several modeling stints from City Chain, the watch company. Her modeling for the watch gained the attention of Lee Chi Ngai, one of Hong Kongs major directors. He then offered her a role in his film Doctor Mark in 1995. The film was a success and soon she was offered a role in the film Full Throttle, for which she was nominated as Best Newcomer at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1995.
Then the following year, Gigi Leung released her first album, Love Myself. She also performed in several concerts including, Funny Face.
Since the success of her first films, Gigi Leung was then seen in more than 20 movies, appearing in comedies and dramas. She starred opposite some of the most famous Hong Kong leading men including, Jet Li, Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Andy Lau. In 1999, she appeared in Tempting Heart, for which she was nominated as Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Festival. In 2000, Gigi Leung was again nominated as Best Supporting Actress in A War Named Desire.
Aside form appearing in the big screen, Gigi Leung also appeared on television. She was seen on the television serial The Last Breakthrough in 2004. She also performed on the musical The Great Entertainer that same year. Also in 2004, she was in the Japanese film Quill.
At present, Gigi Leung is busy with her role as ambassador of UNICEF and World Wide Find for Nature Hong Kong. She is also the spokesperson of Fancl House, the Japanese cosmetics.
Gigi Leung was once involved with Hong Kong star Ekin Cheng in 1999. The relationship brought her bad publicity since at that time Ekin was still dating actress Maggie Siu. She and Ekin separated in 2006 and it rumored that she is dating another man from France.
