Candice Bergen Biography
Candice Bergen is the daughter of model Frances Westcott and radio ventriloquist Edgar Bergen. Her first television appearance was on Marxs Quiz Show YOU BET YOUR LIFE at age 11 ½. Young Candice said she wanted to become a fashion designer when she grew up. She worked as a fashion model but soon began acting. She appeared in such films as CARNAL KNOWLEDGE and STARTING OVER, for which she received an Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for best actress despite initial rocky reviews.
On MURPHY BROWN, Candice Bergen played a role of a successful journalist. Although the show is no doubt comedy, it tackled important issues: the character Murphy Brown, a recovering alcoholic, became a single mother and later battled breast cancer. The sitcom was extremely successful; Bergen was nominated for an Emmy Award seven times and won five between 1989 and 1995. After winning her 5th award, she declined for future nominations for her role as Murphy Brown.
Oxygen network offered a new job for Candice Bergen as a host in EXHALE WITH CANDICE BERGEN. She also portrayed the role of the sweet-yet-determined pageant host Kathy Morningside in MISS CONGENIALITY. She also played as the Mayor of New York in SWEET HOME ALABAMA. Later, Candice Bergen joined the cast of BOSTON LEGAL as Shirley Schmidt, legal partner of William Shatner. In 2006, Candice received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her performance in BOSTON LEGAL.
Candice Bergen has done many guest appearances on TV shows including SEINFELD (playing Murphy Brown), FAMILY GUY, LAW & ORDER, WILL & GRACE, and SEX AND THE CITY where she played Enid Frick. Bergen was well-known for starring in an ad campaign for the SPRINT phone company as Dime Lady that runs for quite a period of time.
Candice Bergen went to take her degree at the University of Pennsylvania. However, she wasnt able to take her education seriously and was asked to leave the University after failing two subjects. She married French film director Louis Malle in 1981. They were blessed with a lovely daughter Chloe in 1985. Bergen and Malle were married until his death by cancer in 1995. Currently, her daughter is attending Brown University while she is now married to New York real estate magnate and philanthropist Marshall Rose.
