Not long after her labor work, Bai Ling underwent and passed the Peoples Liberation Armys examinations, and soon became an artist soldier in Tibet, where her main task was to entertain the troops with musical theater. She also worked as a nurse in the army, and after three years, Bai Ling was discharged from military service. She then pursued a career as a professional actress at the Peoples Art Theater of Chengdu, and her performances in theater led her to a role in director Teng Wenjis film, On The Beach, in 1985. This was followed by other movies such as Suspended Sentence, Yueyue, and Tears in Suzhou. She gained widespread fame however, in the movie Arc Light, where she played the character of a girl who managed to have an affair with her doctor despite having a psychological disorder.
In 1991, Bai Ling moved to New York and appeared in American movies, as well as to study at New York Universitys film department as a visiting scholar.
Bai Ling became part of the 1994 cult movie The Crow, as the lover/half-sister of the villain Top Dollar. Her biggest break in English film was in the movie Red Corner, and the following year she was hailed as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World by People Magazine. She as well appeared in Chris Isaaks video Please, and shaved off her hair in order to portray her role as Tubtim in the movie Anna and the King.
In 2005, Bai Ling took part in the VH1 show But Can They Sing? where non-singer celebrities a chance to sing on each episode and then allowed the audiences to vote off one contestant per week. Bai Ling became well known for her performances of Like a Virgin and I Wanna Be Sedated. She was vote off just before the shows grand finale but was invited back to do a special performance of the song I Touch Myself. Her most recent work was in lost, playing the role of Achara in Jacks flashbacks.
Bai Ling is currently seen with Philadelphia businessman Scott DeGirolamo. She has admitted however, in the New York Daily News and FHM, that she is bisexual.
