Born Ahslee Nicole Simpson on the 3rd of October 1984, Simpson is a native of Texas and raised in Dallas, daughter of ex Baptist youth minister, Joe Truett and ex Sunday school teacher Tina Ann Drew. Her sister is the famous pop singer Jessica Simpson. Ashlee was home-schooled by her mother and later on attended the Prairie Creek Elementary School. She also studied classical ballet at the young age of three and at was admitted to the prestigious School of American Ballet in New York at 7.

While under the School of American Ballet, she had an eating disorder lasting for more than a month. That time her weight dropped to 70 pounds at her height of 5 ft and 2 in. With the persistence and patience of her parents she was able to recover.

When her sister Jessica had a record break the family decided to move to Los Angeles. There she appeared in several TV commercials. She also became one of Jessica’s back up dancers. This exposed her to career in singing and acting. She started to act in several film and television shows including Malcolm in the Middle. In 2002 she had a small role in The Hot Chick and she also appeared as a regular guest in the television series 7th Heaven.

In 2003, following the footsteps of her sister she recorded her own song “Just Let Me Cry”. The song was used in the soundtrack of the film Freaky Friday. The success of her recorded song got her a deal with Geffen Records.
Her first record album was released in 2004. Entitled Autobiography, sales reached 398,000 copies making it a triple platinum. Ashley co-wrote most of the songs and despite the mixed reviews from critics she started having followings. The single Pieces of Me became the biggest hit in the summer.

At the same time, she appeared on the reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, featuring her sister and her then husband. Eventually she got her own reality show, The Ashlee Simpson show which ran during the summer of 2004 and followed by ten episodes in 2005. She received the Song of the Summer Teen Choice Award for Pieces of Me at the Teen Choice Award 2004. She also won the Billboard Award of 2004 for New Female Artist of the year and was one of the Breakout Stars of Entertainment Weekly. With the success of her first album she went on a North American concert tour. She also appeared in the film Undiscovered and appeared on stage for the musical Chicago. She released her second album entitled I am Me in 2005.
