Anne attended the Francis W. Parker School and although she was already considered a good actress even then, that she was offered to play in As The World Turns, she decided to finish her high school before pursuing any career in acting.
After graduation she left for New York to accept an offer in the soap. She was first noticed in the soap Another World where she played the roles of Vicky and Marley Love Hudson. Then she also appeared in several films such as Vocano and Wag the Dog. She also starred in Donnie Brasco, in the remake of Psycho and in Six Days Seven Nights. She played opposite Hollywoods top actors including star Harrison Ford, sexy and talented Johnny Depp and hot Vince Vaughn.
She also appeared on stage and acted in the play Proof and Twentieth Century. She won the Tony Award for the Twentieth Century. Aside from acting in the stage, she appeared in television and starred in ABCs Men in Trees and in Wild Side as the lesbian lover of Joan Chen.
Anne is a self-confessed lesbian and had a relationship with Ellen De Generes. They met and dated in 1997 and went to do several film and television projects. However they separated in 2000 and Anne stated dating Coleman Laffoon. She married Coleman in 2001 and their first child was born in 2002. However Anne divorced his husband in 2007. Rumors said that it was for James Tupper, her co-star in Men in Trees.
After her break up with DeGeneres, she confessed that she was suffering for mental illness, such as having an alter ego named Celestia, a daughter of God and half sister of Jesus and who also had encounters with extraterrestrials. According to Anne, the main cause of her mental illness was her abusive father. She disclosed many sad details of his abuse in her autobiography Call Me Crazy.
