Annas parents are both teachers. Though she was born in Canada, the family moved to New Zealand before she entered school, when she was just four years old. She loves music even as a young child that her hobbies included playing the piano, the viola and even the cello. Though musically inclined, she was also a sports enthusiast as a child and her days were spent between music and doing gymnastics, swimming and skiing. Acting was not one of her interests as a child though she was only nine when she made The Piano in 1993.
She accidentally landed the role of Flora when she accompanied her sister to the audition for The Piano. Not wanting to be left out she tried the monologue. The director got impressed with her performance and decided to cast her. She won the role over five thousand other young girls who went to the audition. The critics loved film and it won several awards in many film festivals. It also became a hit that Anna soon found herself adored by fans across the globe. Her winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress added to her stardom.
The Piano was not a Hollywood movie, since it was produced as an independent film. Thus, her family did not see it as something that would change her life, however with the success of the film, she was soon offered many roles. Except for the three commercials she made, she did not accept any of the offers. Instead, she continued with her studies at the Hutt Intermediate School. But then her parents divorced and she moved with her mother to Los Angeles. She then got her high school diploma at the Windward School and begun accepting roles in 1996, playing the young Jane in the film adaptation in Jane Eyre. This was followed by Fly Away Home, The Member of the Wedding, Shes All That, Hurlyburly and Amistad.
In 2000, she played the role of Rogue in X-Men and then reprised her role in X2: X-Men United in 2003 and X Men 3: The Last Stand in 2006. Her role as Rogue returned her to world wide fame. In 2007 she appeared in the HBO movie Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.
