Anna Friel was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, on July 12, 1976. Her parents were both teachers, and at an early age, she has already found praise for her performances in numerous local talent shows. At the age of 13, Anna Friel was cast in a role in the popular miniseries G.B.H., opposite Michael Palin. This stint was followed by a stream of appearances on Britiish television, including the long running soap opera Emmerdale Farm and Medics. Because of her incredible acting prowess, it was not long when Anna Friel found herself in yet another long running drama series, Brookside.

Anna Friel became recognized as an actress with a true gift in portraying character roles, thanks to a rather dark storyline in which she had to murder her abusive father. Anna Friel became one of the series’ most unforgettable characters, especially when she caused a raucous in doing a lesbian kiss on British television. She stayed in the soap for a couple of years, and after leaving the show Anna Friel made more guest appearances on TV, and after which she made her debut on the big screen opposite Paul Bettany and Rachel Weisz in the World War II epic, Land Girls.

The following movies Anna Friel starred in were not much of a success, despite working with notable names in the industry such as Kevin Kline in the 1999 film adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ewan McGregor in Rogue Trader in the same year. However, Anna Friel focused her attention on stage and made her Broadway debut in Patrick Marber’s critically acclaimed production of Closer, opposite Natasha Richardson and Rupert Graves. Her character in the play transformed even famous celebrities to be under her fan base, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Pacino. Now gaining a newly transformed stardom and a celebrity fan base, Anna Friel became the focus the media for being romantically involved with notable stars as well. She was first found dating actor George Clooney and eventually singer Robbie Williams. However, she found love and solace when she began a relationship with longtime friend David Thewlis. Together they have a child, born in 2005.

Anna Friel’s most recent work was in the 2005 films Goal! and Goal! II, soccer flicks which became commercial hits. She is now working on the film’s upcoming sequel, Goal! III, as well as playing the role of Chuck on ABC’s new series, Pushing Daisies.
