Though most expected her to be a typical Latina, her experiences growing up from a Jewish and a totally non Hispanic neighborhood, exposed her to a more Jewish environment than that a Hispanic one. She was often quoted as having attended several bar mitzvahs but never a quinceanera.
Americas first film appearance was in 2002s Gotta Kick It Up which was followed by Real Women Have Curves, her first film debut. Then she appeared in television in Touched by an Angel. This was followed by The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants, which was well received by both the critics and the viewers. She was noticed in her role in The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants and in 2005 she received the Movieline Breakthrough Award. Later that year she appeared in director Trip Cullmans Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, an off-Broadway play.
Then in 2006, she got the lead role in the now hit series Ugly Betty. Ugly Betty was an adaptation of Colombias Betty La Fea which is about a very unattractive but intelligent woman working in a fashion world. In Ugly Betty, America plays the ugly Betty Suarez. The role had her use fake braces and wear bushy eyebrows, unflattering wig, makeup and clothes. Her smile, made famous by the show, is now reported to be insured for ten million dollars by Lloyds of London.
Her role in Ugly Betty earned her won her the Best Actress Performance in Television Series Comedy or Musical in the 2007 Golden Globe Awards for Television. Her winning performance earned her the respect and congratulations of the United States House of Representatives for being one of the role models for young Latinas of her generation. Then on January of 2007 she was awarded Best Female Actor in Comedy Series by the Screen Actors Guild. The same year she was chosen by Time Magazine as one of the Time 100: Most Influential People in the World.
