Amanda Tapping was born on August 28, 1965 in Rochford, Essex in England. She only spent a short time in South Benfleet, Essex, and when she was three years old, she and her family relocated to Ontario, Canada. She studied at the North Toronto High School where she became the recipient of the school’s Dramatic Arts Award and Environmental Science Award. Her parents always wanted her to pursue a career in the sciences, but she knew that her heart belongs to acting.

Amanda Tapping then studied drama at the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Arts in Windsor, Ontario. When she graduated from the university, Amanda Tapping spent another four years studying theater and appeared on a number of stage productions. She also co-founded Random Acts, an improvisational Canadian comedy group, with two other stage fellows.

Amanda Tapping had supporting roles in many film and television shows including Booty Call, Life or Something Like It, Rent-a-Kid, The Outer Limits The X Files, Due South, and Forever Knight. Other TV credits on her list are Lessons in Lovem Remembrance, The Haunting of Lisa, Degree of Guilt, The Newsroom, and Millenium. Her real success onscreen arrived in 1997 when she was cast to portray the role of Colonel Samantha Carter in the successful TV series, Stargate SG-1.

As Samantha Carter, Amanda Tapping was finally able to fulfill her parents’ dream-for her to be a scientist. Her role pictured skills ranging from keen military tactics to astrophysics, quantum mechanics as well as software engineering and biology. She is also capable of understanding alien technologies and come up with solutions to the troubles faced by SG-1 where they may be.

Amanda Tapping also directed an episode in the seventh season of Stargate SG-1. She also took part in the first USO tour in the Middle East. Amanda Tapping is a proud member of Women in Film & Video and as well hosted the group’s annual Spotlight Gala Awards. Her acting skills earned her acting awards and nominations including a Leo Award, two Saturn Awards, and two Gemini Award nominations. Recently, Amanda Tapping was hailed as a ‘Wonder Woman on Air’ by New York’s Multichannel News and Women in Cable & Telecommunications. She is also involved in educating new actors via Women in Film’s Flash Forward program.

Amanda Tapping as well devotes time as a spokesperson for UNICEF.

Amanda Tapping has three brothers, one of them being her twin. She is married to Alan Kovacs, and they are blessed with one daughter, Olivia, born in 2005.
