Alyson Hannigan was born on the 24th of March 1974 in Washington, D.C. She was born Alyson Lee Hannigan from Al Hannigan and Emilie Posner who divorced a year after she was born. After the divorce, Alyson was raised in Atlanta by her mother. She is Jewish and has Irish ancestry.

She first appeared on screen as baby in Active Parenting and in the commercial of Duncan Hines in 1978. But it was years later, in 1985 actually, before she resumes her acting career. She attended North Hollywood High School during her teens. When she visited her father in Santa Barbara she took the opportunity to audition for agents.

Her first major appearance for film was in the science fiction comedy My Stepmother Is an Alien in 1988. Throughout the beginning of the 90s she appeared in several commercial roles and supporting roles in television. She appeared in the series Picket Fences and Touched by an Angel. She also appeared in Roseanne. In 1997 she landed the role or Willow Rosenberg in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She played the role of the best friend of Buffy. The show was a big hit and Alyson was catapulted to stardom along with the other casts of Buffy. When Buffy ended in 2003 she was earning $250,000 per episode. She reprised her Willow role in the Buffy spin off Angel.

Teenagers across the country soon recognized her and thus she was cast in teen flicks. She appeared in the comedy American Pie. She reprised her Michelle Flaherty role in American Pie 2 and American Wedding. She also appeared in Boys and Girls.

In 2004, Alyson appeared on stage at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in the West End adaptation of When Harry Met Sally. She played opposite Luke Perry. Then in 2005 she returned to television in the hit How I Met Your Mother, playing the role of Lily. She is also a regular guest star in Veronica Mars. In 2006 she appeared in the romantic comedy film Date Movie playing the role of Julia Jones. Then in 2007 she was asked to be one of the presenters in the 2007 Grammy Awards. She has several movies on the line up.

Alyson is married to actor Alexis Denisof, one of her co stars in Buffy. They married on October 11, 2003 and now live in Santa Monica, California. The two have been friends since the days of Buffy but were never had any romantic relationship. Alyson even fixed Alexis with her best friend at that time.
