Alley graduated in 1980 from Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School but she had been dancing with the American Ballet Theatre since she was six. She wanted to pursue dancing until she got more involved in acting. As young child growing up in New York, Alley had many talents and among them is writing. She wrote She Was Nice to Mice at the age of twelve. The book published by McGraw-Hill became an instant best seller.
Her first encounter with acting was in local stage productions. She then appeared in many made for movie tv-films by the year 1981. Then she appeared in three episodes of the then hit series Hill Street Blues. This was followed by her film debut starring with Sean Penn in Bad Boys in 1983. The 80s made her one of the most famous young actresses in Hollywood. She appeared in War Games, Maid to Order, and the hits Short Circuit, The Breakfast Club and St. Elmos Fire made her a big celebrity.
Compared to her fame in the 80s, her fame ebbed by the 90s. Still she appeared in several television series and films. In 1988 she also appeared in High Art. High Art, a film about love between two women was hailed by the critics. The following year, she became the lead role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, an off-Broadway play.
She also again took up writing in the 90s and wrote and published Yesterday I Saw the Sun: Poems. By 2003 she reunited with then Breakfast Club co-star and friend Anthony Michael Hall when she appeared as a guest star in televisions The Dead Zone. Later she appeared in CSIs Leaping Lizards episode.
Alley received many awards for her film career. In 1998, she was awarded for Best Actress performance in High Art by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. This was followed by the Best Female Lead given to her the following year by the Independent Spirit Award. In 2005 MTV Movie Awards awarded her, along with co-stars Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald, the Silver Bucket of Excellence Award.
Alley Sheedy married Angela Lansburys nephew, David Lansbury. She and David have a daughter named Rebecca. Her previous romances included Richie Sambora and Eric Stolz.
